KEC or with other words DTM was a military transport ship from the WW2. It is sunk on the relation between Piran and Strunjan about 2,9 km of Madona peninsula in Piran. About the wreck there is very little known. We know that it belonged to italian navy and that it was probably sunk in the spring of 1945 by an aeroplane.
Steel hull is 47,3 m long and 6,1 m wide; it has 3 smaller propellers and 2 rudders. It is lying upside-down on the deck, on the sandy bottom 24 meters deep. It is slightly tilted on the left side.
In 1984 Zvone Kralj, the boss of aquarium Piran took to the KEC an arceological/diver team, who reported a lot of ammunition, bags, full of white unknown powder and various boxes, all around the wreck.
Few days before the arceological/diver team arrived, someone has taken one of the ships cannons. The second one was taken later in 1985 by the police and Zvone Kralj to maritime museum in Piran.
For the maritime museum in Piran a diving team has brought also an emergency rocket with parachute, box of ammunition, some cutlery and a bottle made from steel that belonged to one of the seamen. The team made a good documentation on the wreck also later with sonar.
On the dive we can penetrate the wreck from right (smaller opening) and left side (bigger opening). Penetration on the wreck is advisable only for experienced divers.
Becouse it is turned upside down, it gives you a unique excursion – you can swim almost through all the wreck’s lenght. We need to have an extreme precaution on the muddy bottom – so very good buoyancy control is necessary.
Inside the wreck a lot of fish can be found – but also a Lobster (Homarus gammarus) or a Conger eel (Conger conger) is nothing special.
The visibility can vary from 10 meters to very bad – about 0,5 meter. The currents are normaly not strong.
